U.S. Senate Approves Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018
June 29, 2018
The U.S. Senate voted 86-11 on Thursday to approve the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (also known as the Farm Bill). It will take a few days to sort through the various last-minute amendments added to help the bill pass overwhelmingly. The next step will be naming of the members to the House/Senate conference committee to reconcile differences between the versions approved by each body this month.
The Senate version included reauthorization of the wool marketing loan and full funding in authorization of the wool textile trust provisions. The National Sheep Industry Improvement Center is funded through 2023. Language is included for the all-important disease vaccine bank and development of pharmaceuticals for minor species as supported by the American Sheep Industry Association.
More information on the bill and how it might change as it works its way through the conference committee will be available in the weeks to come. ASI and its representatives in Washington, D.C., are keeping a close eye on the developments in the meantime.
