Sheepish at the Station in New York
September 20, 2013
Chances are if you were hanging around New York City’s west side over the past few days, you bumped into something unusual. The Getty gas station on 24th Street and 10th Avenue, only recently a working station, is now a public-art project.
Surrounded by a white picket fence, it features several sheep by the late François-Xavier Lalanne grazing on a grassy knoll.
Sheep Station is the first site-specific installation to grace the pastures of Getty’s unlikely space. According to its website, the “classic 20th Century American icon” will eventually be transformed into luxury residences, with Getty Station being “incorporated into the building as a permanent element.”
