World’s Largest Wool Bag
July 26, 2013
Gillespie county 4-H and the Fredericksburg, Texas, Boy Scouts are on schedule constructing and preparing to display the world’s largest burlap wool sack, according to Timothy Koock, president of Woolsacks, Inc., of Fredericksburg.
The largest burlap bug currently on record, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, measured 3.42 meters (11.15 ft.) high and 4.3 meters (14.11 ft.) wide and was unveiled in England in 2011. The bag being constructed in Texas will measure approximately 13 feet wide by 24 feet long, four-times larger than a normal size wool bag.
The bag will be unveiled Aug. 23 and paraded down Main Street at 10 a.m. as part of a celebration kicking off the 125th Gillespie Country Fair. Gillespie Country 4-H girls are taking the lead in constructing the bag while the 4-H boys work to devise a way to fill a bladder inside the huge wool bag with helium so it will float along the parade route.
A presentation will be made recognizing the achievement of the Guinness World Record wool bag immediately following the parade.
