Wool Quality Improvement Program: Education

Classing Program:

Training:
Maintain current training program. Groups wishing to conduct a classer training school will arrange with a certified instructor (currently there are 4). Registration fees should cover costs. Mill tours are valuable and should still be included if possible.

Maintenance:
This involves keeping track of individual classers progress (through levels) and coordination of changes that need to be made from time to time in the code of practice. Probably the appropriate groups to actively deal with this issue would be ASI and USWMA.

Action Plan:
Discuss details of proposal at ASI convention with ASI personal and USWMA.

Information Needs of Growers:

Information Development:
Direction of ASI (information and instructional materials must be developed as soon as standards committee report is approved by industry). Depending on results of standards committee it is suspected that several different approaches need to be taken-i.e. how can large producers adapt to standards but a more difficult task would be how smaller producers adapt to standards. Also the plan producers use to adapt to standards may vary by location and thus instructional materials may differ.

Information Transfer:
  • Extension Service
  • Marketing Agencies
  • State and local associations and meetings
  • Key producers
  • Certified classers
