October 2010: Livestock Protection Dogs
Over the last several decades, predator management and livestock protection tools available to the sheep industry have been significantly curtailed and completely eliminated in some circumstances. With the loss of traditional management tools, livestock protection dogs have become an extremely important means to reduce predator attacks on sheep.

ASI ON THE PROFILE SERIES
Prescribed Grazing Using Sheep -- ASI is the national organization representing the interests of more than 82,000 sheep producers located throughout the United States. From East to West, farm flocks to range operations, ASI works to represent the interests of all producers. From the domestic and international promotion of wool and pelts to its work on legislative, science and technology, animal health and resource management issues, ASI is a producer-powered federation of state organizations dedicated to the common goal of promoting the profitability and well-being of the U.S. sheep industry.
SNP Chip for Sheep -- An international team of researchers, led by AgResearch scientists, have developed a new genomic tool that will transform the future selection and breeding of sheep. This tool - a SNP chip - is now commercially available for breeders and researchers.
Called the Ovine SNP50 BeadChip, this cutting-edge tool will enable researchers to characterise the genetic variation at more than 50,000 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) in the sheep genome. This will pinpoint the small genetic differences that produce a variety of commercially important traits in sheep, fast-tracking the rate of genetic gain in the industry.
The research has been undertaken by the International Sheep Genomics Consortium (ISGC), a partnership of scientists and funding agencies, including Ovita, which is developing a range of publicly available genomic resources. Access to these resources will help researchers find genes associated with traits that are important to their industries.
August 2009: Endurance Shearing Event
The two American shearers who recently set precedent for marathon endurance sheep shearing in the United States were highlighted on the Thursday, Aug. 13, edition of AgDay-The Country Experience. Doug Rathke (Minn.) and Gavin McKerrow (Wisc.) sheared 1,094 sheep in a 24-hour period.
AgDay was in Dimmitt, Texas, to document the event. The report includes footage of the shearing as well as interviews with the shearers. To see the story, go to www.AgDay.com, and play the Thursday, Aug. 13, program.
