Dec. 12, 2003 -- Elizabeth Lautner, a former vice president for science and technology with the National Pork Board (NPB), has been named director of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center.
She will work at the island facility for four years, before returning to the NPB.
?Beth has worked tirelessly both for the pork industry and animal agriculture in general for many years,? said Paul Rodgers, American Sheep Industry Association deputy director of policy. ?The livestock industry and the public sector at-large are very fortunate to have her in this key role.?
Plum Island is located off the northeastern tip of New York?s Long Island, and is America?s first line of defense against foreign animal diseases. USDA activities at Plum Island are carried out by scientists and veterinarians with the department?s Agricultural Research Service and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
