Rejected Australian Sheep Die at Sea

Many of the 57,000 Australian sheep that were denied entry into Saudi Arabia in August have died at sea. Saudi officials turned the shipload of sheep away after a Saudi vet determined that 6 percent of the sheep were infected with scabby mouth. The tolerance level for admittance of scabby mouth-infected sheep into Saudi Arabia is 5 percent or less.

The incident has raised the ire of both animal-rights activists and Australian Democrats, with representatives of both groups demanding an end to such shipments due to prior incidents and the likelihood for similar situations in the future.
