Improved Pasture and Range

June 20, 2003
According to the Livestock Marketing Information Center, overall U.S. pasture and range conditions continued to improve compared to a year ago. However, in some regions pasture and range condition prospects are somewhat uncertain due to limited subsoil moisture reserves.

Nationally, as of early June, 16 percent of the U.S. pasture and range was reported as in very poor or poor condition for grazing (the two lowest categories) compared to 28 percent a year ago and a previous 5-year average of 15 percent. Still, overall conditions have improved since early May when 21 percent of pasture and range was reported as very poor or poor.
