Livestock Slaughter Report Released

August 2005 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture?s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released its monthly slaughter report on June 24 indicating an increase in lamb and mutton production from over a year ago May.

At 14.8 million pounds, lamb and mutton production was up 14 percent from May 2004, however, down from 15.5 million pounds in April of this year. Sheep slaughter totaled 208,000 head, 10-percent above last year. The average live weight was 143 pounds, up 5 pounds from May a year ago.
