Out On The Land host Larry Butler, Ph.D., traveled to Montana to visit with the Lehfeldt family (Bob, Marie and Ben) as they explained their participation in the Sage Grouse Initiative (SGI).
"Some of the main things that the SGI has helped with is to establish smaller pastures by piping water and putting in several miles of fence to establish these pastures, and then we went to a rotational grazing system," Bob explains. "This has helped our operation and also helped the sage grouse by establishing more vegetation to protect them from predators.
"Establishing these pastures and implementing the rotational grazing has improved our bottom line from the standpoint that we have more grass so our livestock does better, we are selling a higher-weight product and we are leaving some grass to improve the range condition. It has been a plus for both the ranch and the sage grouse."
