The executive board of the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) will be traveling to Detroit, Mich., July 18-19 for its summer meeting and to participate in an industry tour being hosted by the Michigan Sheep Breeders Association (MSBA) and spearheaded by MSBA President Dale Thorne.
Craig Morris, Ph.D., administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock, Poultry and Seed Program, will update the board on the agency's lamb initiatives with ASI including definitions and standards to sort lamb from mutton, lamb price reporting system updates and the association's request for a $5 million Section 32 lamb purchase.
The top workload of the meeting is a recommendation of the 2013-2014 wool budget being proposed by the American Wool Council and the legislative, or unrestricted, budget for ASI.
While in Michigan, the executive board will take the opportunity to visit with Wolverine Packing Inc., a lamb feeding operation, United Producers Inc. Auction Barn as well as visit Dale Thorne's operation.
