The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) supported the request by the Montana Wool Growers Association (MWGA) for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to provide a 90-day extension on the comment periods for the draft resource management plans (RMPs) for Miles City, the High-Line and Billings/Pompeys Pillar areas.
The MWGA and ASI are deeply concerned as to what the final results of these plans could be. It is quite clear that the proposed management actions will have a substantial and likely negative impact on sheep producers operating throughout central and eastern Montana. In fact, one of the proposed alternatives in the Miles City Plan would remove sheep grazing on hundreds of thousands of acres of BLM lands. No matter the alternative chosen, there is likely to be a profound and lasting impact on the sheep industry and on the communities throughout Montana for years to come.
Granting the public an extra 90 days to more thoroughly review and understand the proposed management actions should cause BLM little disruption.
