Farmers had planted just 12 percent on the U.S. corn crop by May 5, compared to 47 percent by this time on average over the past five years. Last year, which was an unusually early planting season, 69 percent of the crop was planted.
Similarly, just 3 percent of the U.S. corn crop in the 18 major producing states had emerged by May 5, compared to 15 percent on average over the past five years and 29 percent emerged by this time last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly Crop Progress report.
