Operation: Not only does Compton buy and sell sheep for his business, he is also involved with ranching.

Why are you an ASI Guard Dog member? "The main reason I got involved is to help with the problem of predators, such as bobcats and coyotes."

How do you think the industry has benefited from the Guard Dog funds? "I think the industry has benefited from these funds because we have learned of ways to help control predators."

What do you think are the industry's needs in the future? "We need people to increase their production levels because the shortage of sheep numbers makes it difficult for anyone to operate."

Name: Don Godby, manager of the Godby Sheep Co.

Location: Eaton, Colo.

Operation: Godby manages a lamb feeder operation turning over 25,000 to 30,000 feeder lambs during the year.

Why are you an ASI Guard Dog member? "I feel it is important to support ASI (American Sheep Industry Association) because they have helped to get so many programs in place to benefit the producer and feeder. I feel the need to give a portion of that for support of ASI."

How do you think the industry has benefited from the Guard Dog funds? "These funds have helped the producer (ewe-lamb program), the feeder (wool and pelt programs) and have been an overall benefit to the industry."

What do you think are the industry's needs in the future? "I think the sheep industry needs to increase the production of lamb to maintain a healthy infrastructure and have enough product to have some market share of U.S. sales. I believe this is beginning to happen in 2005."
