In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the American Lamb Board (ALB) teamed up with New York City's Meatball Shop to feed thousands of residents who were left without power, heat and, in some cases, homes in the Rockaways, a hard-hit area of New York City.
Meatball Shop owners, Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow, devoted many days to helping the Rockaway residents, bringing hot food to the neighborhood daily along with blankets donated by patrons of their restaurants. ALB eagerly donated 150 pounds of lamb on behalf of lamb producers across America to help with their efforts, enough to provide meatballs for hundreds of people.
"Our entire community was saddened by the devastation in New York City and New Jersey," said Megan Wortman, ALB executive director. "We wanted to do what we could to ease some of the suffering by facilitating hot meals for those in need."
