COOL Legislation Introduced on Senate Floor

January 15, 2005

January 2005 -- U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) on Nov. 16, 2004, introduced a bill to modify country-of-origin labeling (COOL) legislation. Sens. Tim Johnson (D-SD) and Craig Thomas (R-WY) are co-sponsors of the bill, which would move the mandatory COOL implementation date up one year to September 2005, and would require labeling on processed foods, which currently are exempt from the legislation.

The American Sheep Industry Association policy supports mandatory labeling for lamb.
