Mitchell Named GIPSA Administrator

June 15, 2012
Larry Mitchell was appointed the new Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) administrator at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). He replaces Dudley Butler who resigned the post in January.

In the past, Mitchell has lobbied for the National Corn Growers Association, the National Farmers Union and served as deputy administrator for farm programs at USDA's Farm Service Agency. He most recently served as the associate director of the office of advocacy and outreach at USDA.

Mitchell pushed for government management of commodity supplies and the imposition of new regulations on meat processors during the 2008 Farm Bill procedures; and it is anticipated that he may place renewed emphasis on the oversight of meatpackers.
