Sheep Industry Faces

In Memory of Dr. Monty Chappell

 

Dr. Monty Chappell, a professor at the University of Kentucky and sheep and 4-H Extension specialist, died Oct. 15, 2004.

 

Chappell was involved in all aspects of the state?s sheep industry, from the classes he taught at UK?s College of Agriculture to his work with youth at Kentucky State Fair sheep shows.

 

?He will be sadly missed by all of the families that he has touched throughout his career at the university,? said 4-H/Youth Development leader Karen Douglas.

 

?Dr. Chappell always had time to ask about all of our children ? he loved kids and he knew sheep,? said Daviess County 4-H Leader Susan Zoglmann.




South Dakota Lamb Producers Honored

 

Three South Dakota families were honored as Master Lamb Producers for 2004 at the 67th annual convention of the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association.

 

They included:

  • Randy and Sona Kott, lamb to finish producers
  • Allen and Zenda Haase, lamb to finish producers
  • Dave and Colleen Juntunen, purebred producers.




USDA?s Murano Returning to Academic Community

 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Elsa Murano has accepted the three-titled position of vice chancellor of agriculture at the Texas A&M University system, dean of the College of Agriculture at Texas A&M University-College Station and director of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

 

Murano submitted her resignation to President Bush, effective Dec. 3, 2004.

 

?I am extremely excited to be going back home to Texas and to once again be part of the Texas A&M family,? Murano said.
