Sheep producers planning to import sheep semen from the Europe Union (EU) have been waiting on import paperwork from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
American Sheep Industry Association meetings with USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) this month indicate that the department and EU government officials have agreed on the protocols for the importation of sheep semen.
APHIS is in the process of developing a harmonized health certificate to cover all EU members and will be presenting it formally to the EU Commission this fall. Upon formal agreement of the EU, it is anticipated that imports should be able to begin around the first of the year.
