President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act on Tuesday in what is being called the first major overhaul of the food safety system in the United States since the 1930s. Citing outbreaks of E. Coli and salmonella contamination in eggs, peanuts and produce over the past few years, the bill expands the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) inspection of food production and distribution systems and gives FDA the authority to order a food recall. It gives the Health and Human Services Secretary the authority to suspend the registration of food facilities, and FDA can now refuse food from foreign suppliers who do not allow an FDA inspection.
