Japan Removed from FMD-Free List

October 29, 2010

The existence of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been confirmed in Japan. For this reason, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has removed Japan from the list of FMD-free regions causing importation restrictions.

This action restricts the importation of ruminants and swine and the fresh meat and other animal products of ruminants and swine from Japan as is necessary to prevent the introduction of FMD into the United States.

The interim rule is effective Oct. 25, however, the restriction is being imposed retroactively to April 20. Comments on this issue will be considered if received on or before Dec. 27.
