Uruguayan Sheepmeat Enters Canada

July 9, 2010

Uruguay has been granted access into the Canadian market for bone-out sheepmeat, according to the Uruguayan Ministry for Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP).

The opening comes as a result of years of negotiations and the audit of a number of Uruguayan sheepmeat processing plants by a Canadian technical mission in 2009. MGAP will authorize exports once the already agreed export certificate is released.

Uruguayan sheepmeat exports reached 12,739 tons standard weight in 2009, up 37 percent year-on-year, with the majority shipped to Brazil, European Union and Middle Eastern markets.
