Nashville Trivia

January 8, 2010

Tennessee is a state of inventions. Cotton candy, originally called fairy floss, was invented in Nashville in 1897 and introduced at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair where 68,655 boxes of the candy were sold. The Dempster Dumpster was invented in 1935 in Knoxville to aid in the pickup of used construction materials. The term dumpster is now known worldwide. Tom Thumb Golf, the first patented game of miniature golf, was built on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1927. Even though many places take credit for being the birthplace of Mountain Dew, the sweet, syrupy stuff calls Knoxville home. The touchscreen monitor, the MoonPie, the tow truck and the typewriter ribbon all call Tennessee home. And finally, the first true self-serve grocery store - Piggly Wiggly -- was invented in Memphis.

The 2010 American Sheep Industry Association Convention is being held in Nashville, Tenn., from Jan. 20-23. Mark your calendars and begin making your plans to attend this industry-wide event that will be taking place in Music City.
