Sheep industry leaders are finalizing plans for the annual spring trip to Washington, D.C. Members of the American Sheep Industry Association's (ASI) Legislative Action Council along with member state sheep association delegates will be in Washington from April 29 through May 1.
The purpose of this trip is to visit with federal policy makers regarding legislation and to visit with federal agriculture and land management agencies about programs that affect the business of sheep producers in this country. Topics of interest for meetings include animal rights attacks on protection of livestock, funding for Wildlife Services, domestic and bighorn sheep conflicts, scrapie eradication and opposition to sheep imports from areas of the world subject to foot and mouth disease.
ASI will once again host the American lamb barbecue for congressional and administration representatives on Wednesday evening, April 29, in Alexandria, Va.
A half-day trip to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival will be planned if there is sufficient interest. It will be determined on Friday, March 27, if there is enough participation to warrant this trip.
Producers interested in participating in this event should contact their state association or Peter Orwick at porwick@sheepusa.org.
