AMS Purchases Lamb

February 27, 2009

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) announced on Wednesday the purchase of 108,000 pounds of lamb products at a cost of approximately $388,000. These products will be distributed in federal food and nutrition programs.

Two vendors in this invitation period were awarded contracts. Purchases will be made from Transhumance Inc. (Superior Farms) and Mountain States Rosen LLC. Lamb shoulder chops were purchased as a result of this bid.

"This is a timely announcement for a lamb purchase, particularly for shoulders, as companies begin planning for Easter Passover, which has a heavier focus on leg of lamb," commented Glen Fisher (Texas), president of the American Sheep Industry Association. "AMS has purchased nearly $1.9 million in lamb products of the $2 million lamb purchase program secured this year to assist lamb producers with tough economic conditions."
