July 15, 2004
July 15, 2004 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is proposing to establish Jan. 1, 2008, as the uniform compliance date for new food labeling regulations issued by the agency between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2006.
FSIS is proposing to establish the date to (1) minimize the economic impact of labeling changes by providing for an orderly industry adjustment to new labeling requirements and (2) to be consistent with the approach already established by the Department of Health and Human Services' Food and Drug Administration.
Comments on the proposed rule are due by July 6, 2004, and should be sent to: Docket Clerk; U.S. Department of Agriculture; Food Safety and Inspection Service; 300 12th Street, SW; Room 102; Cotton Annex; Washington, D.C. 20250.
