On the heels of the announcement in mid-November by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) that they had purchased 72,000 pounds of lamb for distribution to federal food and nutrition programs, AMS released the details of the next lamb purchase. The offer applies to lamb shoulder chops.
Offers must be received by AMS before 1:30 p.m., Central time, Monday, Dec. 1, 2008. Acceptances will be announced by midnight, Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. Shipments will be made between Jan. 1 and Jan. 15, 2009.
State-inspected plants that are operating under the State-Federal Cooperative Agreement, Section 301 of the Federal Meat Inspection Act, may bid on destinations within their state except for those items marked federal plants only.
"This is the third invitation of the $2 million lamb purchase program secured this year to assist lamb producers against record high feed and fuel expenses," commented Peter Orwick, executive director for the American Sheep Industry Association.
