March 28, 2008 - President Bush on Wednesday nominated A. Ellen Terpstra as chief agricultural negotiator in the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), with the rank of ambassador.
Terpstra would replace Richard Crowder at USTR and be responsible for directing U.S. agricultural trade negotiations. Opening markets such as Japan and South Korea to more U.S. beef products has been an administration priority.
Terpstra currently serves as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) deputy under secretary of Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services. Prior to this, she served as administrator of USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service. Earlier in her career, she served as president and chief executive officer for USA Rice Federation.
