January 18, 2008
January 18, 2008 - Former North Dakota governor Ed Schafer will appear before the Senate Agriculture Committee on Jan. 24 for a conformation hearing on his nomination to become the next Secretary of Agriculture. President Bush nominated Schafer to fill the post after former Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns resigned to run for a U.S. Senate seat in Nebraska.
Originally scheduled for Jan. 30, Sen. Kent Conrad (N.D.) asked the committee to move the hearing up so it might be possible for Schafer to attend the State of the Union Address on Jan. 28 as a member of the President's cabinet. The nomination is not controversial, so it is likely he will be quickly confirmed by the full Senate following the hearing.
