Recognition for Passage of Farm Bill

December 21, 2007 - The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) joined more than 30 other agriculture groups in praising members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate for their hard work that resulted in the passage of the 2007 Farm Bill. Accordingly, it was urged that a House-Senate conference committee be convened to negotiate this legislation as quickly as possible in order to complete a conference report to the Farm Bill no later than late January or early February.

"The versions of the Farm Bill approved by both the House and Senate not only work to provide a strong safety net for our nation's farm and ranch families, but also meet critical new needs," the signators stated in the letter.

The bipartisan cooperation and overwhelming support for this vitally important legislation was saluted, especially in the face of considerable challenges.

This is the time of year when farm and ranch families, along with their lenders, need to make serious financial decisions for the upcoming crop year; so, the critical importance of completing the Farm Bill and having a safety net in place by late January or early February can not be overstated.

The bipartisan decision of Congress to move forward on the authorization of a full, five-year Farm Bill was also applauded. As Congress prepares to adjourn for the year, the three-month extension of current law, which will preserve the budget baseline and avoid disruption, was appreciated.
