May 2004 -- The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) is one step closer to receiving U.S. Army funding for a Wool/Nomex dye project.
ASI requested the funding via submission of a "White Paper Proposal" in August 2003. The White Paper is just one of several steps required to obtain project funding under the Army's Broad Area Announcement (BAA) program. The BAA is a solicitation to industry and academia requesting research and development in broad areas of need. The ASI submission was made under Warrior Systems Technologies, Flame and Thermal Protection for the Individual Soldier.
ASI received word in late December 2003 that the U.S. Army Soldier Center at Natick, Mass., had approved the paper and earmarked funding for the project, thereby completing step one of the funding process. Step two requires completion of a formal document that requests the funds and provides a detailed description of the project, including time and cost lines, as well as organizational information required by the government for all contractors.
The 26-page document was completed and submitted to the Army on Feb. 18, 2004. The next step will be notification of contract award with a pre-award conference at Natick.
ASI expects award of the contract in late March, and will soon thereafter submit another BAA proposal requesting funding for the development of a family of knitted wool fabrics.
