August 10, 2007 - On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service purchased 36,000 pounds of lamb leg roasts at a cost of approximately $108,000. The roasts will be distributed in the federal food and nutrition programs.
This is the first purchase under new USDA specifications that added two new cuts to the list of frozen lamb products available for sale to this program.
This purchase falls under the lamb purchase program requested by American Sheep Industry Association and approved by Secretary of Agriculture Johanns in April 2006.
Offers for this buy were accepted from one bidder - Mountain States Rosen LLC, Greeley, Colo.
Bids for the next lamb purchase are due by 1:30 p.m., central time, on Friday, Aug. 17, Aug. 24 and Oct. 1-15.
