Feedback to OIE on Animal Welfare Guidelines

August 3, 2007 -The Animal Agriculture Alliance and the Animal Agriculture Coalition, on behalf of their members, provided comments to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in response to its March 2007 Discussion Paper entitled the "Development of Animal Welfare Guidelines for Production Systems (terrestrial animals)." This paper was developed by the OIE Animal Welfare Working Group to set out some of the key issues that the group sees need to be considered in developing animal welfare guidelines for production systems and to suggest next steps in this area.

One significant recommendations made by U.S. animal agriculture representatives as the OIE begins to develop specific recommendations for production system guidelines is that they review species-specific scientific guidelines that have already been considered and adopted by international scientific and industry organizations.

Also stressed was the need for OIE to conduct comprehensive reviews of the relevant science for all production systems.
