FSIS to Install Dishes at Plants

October 13, 2006

October 13, 2006 - USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) intends to install satellite dishes at certain processing plants when the agency deems it "essential to the efficient conduct of inspection."

FSIS says it has determined that "inspection personnel must have reliable, high-speed Internet access to more efficiently and effectively perform their duties." Because not all plants are located in areas with ready access to high-speed Internet service, the agency has concluded the best option is satellite Internet in those instances.

FSIS intends to use the technology in some 2,000 establishments nationwide.
