House Passes Ban on Horse Slaughter

September 8, 2006

September 8, 2006 - The U.S. House of Representatives voted 263-146 Thursday to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

The American Sheep Industry Association and state sheep associations joined with other livestock and agriculture groups in calling for the House to oppose this legislation. The House, however, failed to kill this legislation and sided with animal rights groups who are calling for this ban.

The bill's future is uncertain as the Senate has not acted on a similar bill.
