September 26, 2008 - The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed H.R. 2638, the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance and Continuing Appropriations Act, by a vote of 370 to 58. The continuing resolution (CR) will fund the federal government through March 6, 2009, primarily at fiscal year 2008 levels. H.R. 2638 also includes a disaster assistance package and the fiscal year 2009 Defense, Homeland Security and Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bills.
The CR allows for sheep programs to be continued at the fiscal year 2008 levels through the March 6 extension.
The disaster assistance package appropriates $22.9 billion in emergency supplemental appropriations for relief and recovery from hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters. The U.S. Senate is expected to hold a procedural vote on Saturday and will likely pass the CR so that legislation can be signed into law by next week. The new fiscal year begins on Oct. 1.
