Large Ram Takes Supreme Merino Title

September 1, 2006

September 1, 2006 - A superfine ram from Victoria has taken one of the wool industry's most prestigious awards.

Champion rams from five states competed for the Supreme Merino Ram title on Wednesday at the National Merino Sheep Show at Dubbo in central western New South Wales. The ram, Rockbank Dozer, was named the best.

"He's 16 micron and he's a very large ram for that quality - he's 130 kilos (286 lbs.)," said Stud Principal John Crawford. "Most superfine rams would be 30 inches, this fella's 40 inches at the hips and shoulders so he's a very tall sheep producing an outstanding fiber, and a big quantity of it."
