Wyomingite Wins International Shearing Competition
Twenty-five contestants from the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand participated in the National Western Stock Show's International Shearing Contest. But, Dave Foley of Kaycee, Wyo., took home $1,500 along with top honors.
Other placers included Don Metheral, Provia, Ontario, second place; Davin Perrin, Coming, Iowa, third place; and Doug Rathke, Hutchinson, Minn., fourth place.
Shearers are scored on time, absence of second cuts in the fleece, condition of the fleece, the shearer's manner of handling the sheep, absence of cuts on the sheep and the overall appearance of the shorn sheep.
In Memory of William Boylan
William Boylan, an animal science professor for the University of Minnesota died Feb. 16, 2004.
Boylan was a researcher and teacher at the university for many years. A geneticist, he conducted a lot of sheep research and trained several students who are now involved with sheep research, teaching and extension.
MSBA Elects New Officers
Members of the Michigan Sheep Breeders Association have elected Jim Bristol of West Branch as their president and Max Benne of Sturgis as their vice president.
