September 12, 2008 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service announced on Thursday the purchase of 144,000 pounds of lamb products at a cost of approximately $552,000. These products will be distributed in federal food and nutrition programs.
Two vendors bid in this invitation period and both were awarded contracts. Purchases will be made from Iowa Lamb Processing Corporation, Hawarden, Iowa, and Mountain States Rosen LLC, Greeley, Colo. Lamb shoulder chops and lamb leg roasts were purchased as a result of this bid.
"The industry appreciates the opportunity to participate in programs such as this," commented Burdell Johnson (N.D.), American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) president. "We welcome the timing on this purchase as the fall of the year is an excellent time to boost the market for meat and lambs."
This is the first purchase in a $2 million program requested by ASI and announced by Agriculture Secretary Ed Schaffer in May.
