July 14, 2006
July 14, 2006 - Australia's annual sheep meat quota to the European Union (EU)
has increased by 136 tons to now total 18,786 tons (carcass weight). The
increase (officially gazetted by the European Commission on July 10, 2006)
represents the compensation negotiated as a consequence of the accession of 10
countries to the EU in May 2004.
This quota expansion follows the 150
ton beef compensation allocated to Australia in March 2006 (similarly awarded
due to enlargement of the EU), which resulted in Australia's high-quality beef
quota to the EU increasing to 7,150 tons.
