PA Grazing Workshop Scheduled

July 18, 2008 - The Pennsylvania Targeted Grazing Workshop has been scheduled for Sept. 25-26, 2008. It is being held at the Livestock Evaluation Center in Pennsylvania Furnace. Vegetation management experts, agency managers, contract grazers and interested producers can learn the techniques to implement a targeted grazing program at this event.

Targeted grazing represents the application of a specific kind of livestock at a determined season, duration and intensity to accomplish defined vegetation and landscape enhancement goals. Effective grazing programs for weed control require planning and specialized knowledge in order to eliminate the target plants while improving the health of the desired plants.

Applying the knowledge necessary to create an environment where the grazing animal prefers the target plant and applying the grazing at the proper duration and intensity represent the key ingredients to a successful targeted grazing effort.

The workshops are sponsored by the Natural Resource Conservation Service, American Sheep Industry Association, American Land and Resources Foundation, National Sheep Industry Improvement Center, Joe Skeen Institute for Rangeland Restoration and the Montana Sheep Institute.
