Farm Policy Payment Limits Discussed

November 4, 2005

November 4, 2005 -- The American Sheep Industry Association joined 16 other trade associations in delivering their request urging opposition to amendments that would disrupt the careful policy balance on farm-program payment limits.
The letter to Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH), chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget, and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, discussed decisions included in the 2002 Farm Bill governing limits on farm-program payments that were carefully crafted. The budget reconciliation process is not the appropriate place to affect change to these limits. Upcoming discussions relating to the 2007 Farm Bill would be a more fitting place to work through these considerations.
"Our farmers and ranchers need a predictable, stable farm policy in order to continue to make responsible planting and marketing decisions," concluded the letter.
