Japan Commission Says U.S. Beef Safe
November 4, 2005
November 4, 2005 -- A 28-day public comment period has begun now that Japan's Food Safety Commission approved a report calling beef from young U.S. and Canadian cattle low-risk.
Japan's government will accept public comments until Nov. 29, after which the ministers of health and agriculture will make recommendations to the Japanese government as to whether or not to lift the ban on U.S. and Canadian beef products. Meetings will be held in seven major Japanese cities to gather public comment.
A limited market reopening could occur before year-end for beef cattle 20 months and younger, trade experts say.
