September 30, 2005
September 30, 2005 -- The National Institute of Animal Agriculture (NIAA) hosted the ?ID Info/Expo 2005? this week in Chicago, Ill. Addressing the assembly were: Chuck Lambert, Ph.D., U.S. Department of Agriculture?s (USDA) Deputy Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs; John Clifford, DVM, USDA?s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services Chief Veterinarian; and several industry experts on animal identification.
The sheep working group, led by Cindy Wolf, DVM, met prior to the event. Wolf addressed the expo and presented both the progress on technology research as it relates to the sheep industry, as well as the sheep industry?s plans and priorities for the National Animal Identification System (NAIS).
She explained that the sheep industry has already implemented a mandatory identification system through the National Scrapie Eradication Program. The scrapie program, coupled with the use of group/lot identification, will allow the sheep industry to comply with current NAIS objectives.
