Feed Rule Coming Soon

September 23, 2005

September 23, 2005 -- As reported by the American Meat Institute, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Administrator Lester Crawford, DVM, on Monday announced the Center for Veterinary Medicine is finalizing amendments to feed rules aimed at preventing BSE and that they would be published "very quickly." Crawford said the amendments will make U.S. feed rules mirror Canada's by "closing some gaps."
In July 2004, FDA published an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking that requested comments and scientific information on several additional measures related to animal feed under consideration to help prevent the spread of BSE in the United States. As part of that announcement, FDA tentatively concluded that the agency should propose to remove specified risk materials (SRMs) from all animal feed.
