Processing Plant to Reopen

September 2, 2005

September 2, 2005 -- According to the San Angelo Standard-Times, local sheep industry officials say they hope to reopen the former Ranchers Lamb of Texas slaughterhouse on Tuesday, September 6. The new plant will be called Producers Lamb and Goat LP with Producers Marketing Coop., Inc. (PMCI), being the general partner - the one that manages the operation.
The plant has passed inspection, but is waiting for the paperwork from the U.S. Department of Agriculture before opening the doors. It will have the capacity to slaughter 3,000 sheep and goats a week and will employ about 38 workers.
''The rains have been good, and we hope to see people increase their flock size,'' Ron Pope, manager of PMCI said. ''We see this plant as an opportunity for a ready outlet for producers. It means the feeders in the area have someplace to go with them without having to ship that lamb outside the state.''
