APSA Offering Free Starter Flocks to Youth

Nov. 2003 -- The American Polypay Sheep Association (APSA) recently announced a new program through which FFA and 4-H youth between the ages of 8-19 will receive for free one yearling ewe and two ewe lambs plus $100 credit toward the purchase of a ram or ewe at the 2004 National Polypay Sale. The National Polypay Show and Sale, held in Springfield, Ill., every June, ?is the highlight of our show season,? reports Gordon Sammons of the APSA. ?A tremendous junior show is held in conjunction with the National Show and Sale. This junior show has grown each year. It is competitive, fun and has all of the major classes and a very popular futurity class.?

A futurity ewe is purchased as lamb and exhibited in the futurity class the next year as a yearling.

The APSA utilizes the National Sheep Improvement Program, which involves the use of Expected Progeny Differences. Traits measured include weaning weight, maternal milk, milk and growth, post weaning weight and numbers born. (APSA will waive the first-year NSIP fee if the recipient enrolls in the popular program.)

The deadline to apply for the program is March 1, 2004. For more information, visit the APSA Web site at or contact Gordon Sammons at (309) 944-3692 or e-mail .
