Don't Cut Ag Budget

March 11, 2005
March 11, 2005 -- The American Sheep Industry Association joined 217 other organizations in urging the House and the Senate Budget Committees not to include any reconciliation instructions in the budget resolution. The Honorable Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) and Jim Nussle (R-Iowa), budget committee chairmen for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, respectively, were asked to take this message back to the Senate Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.
The group stressed, "The mandatory programs administered by the Department of Agriculture are of enormous importance to farmers, ranchers, rural businesses, low-income Americans and all our nation's children. We urge the budget committees to adequately fund discretionary spending. Given the cuts agricultural programs have already sustained over the last several years, we ask that you not adopt a discretionary spending level that requires agricultural programs to take additional budget reductions."
