
December 10, 2004 -- The world?s finest bale of merino wool sold in Melbourne on Wednesday for A$279,000. The bale, grown in a controlled environment by The Wool Factory of Horsham, Victoria, tested 11.8 microns, beating the previous record bale by 0.1 microns.
After strong bidding by buyers from Asia and Europe, the bale was sold to Indian textile group Raymond, one of the world?s largest vertical operations. The bale weighed 208 lbs. and measured 2.7 inches in length.
