$1.5 Million Available for ID

October 29, 2004

October 29, 2004 -- On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture set aside an additional $1.5 million for national animal identification system (NAIS) cooperative agreements with states.

According to Secretary Ann Veneman, "States that applied for funding in July and were not selected at that time are now eligible for a portion of the $1.5 million if they meet specified requirements."

Earlier this year, $11.64 million was allocated for cooperative agreements with state and tribal governments to begin implementing the NAIS. An additional $1.5 million has been set aside to fund additional agreements.

Each of the states that applied this past summer but were not selected have been notified that they are now eligible for a minimum of $100,000 to carry out premises registration activities. The revised applications are due by Dec. 1 and must address any feedback received during the evaluation of their first-round application.
